A motor-vehicle collision often causes tragic injuries to an innocent victim. However, the family members who must rally around the victim and provide care are often forgotten in the equation.
Many individuals who find themselves in the caregiver situation of a loved one, have never received any training in how to care for someone who’s disabled or very ill. Instead, these loving family members are forced to learn what they can on the go, acquire any knowledge they can from family or friends, and sometimes pick up some tidbits of advice from medical professionals – if they’re not too busy to help.
As a result, the risk of burnout and compassion fatigue is never far away.
